Which major should I choose?
Choosing a major feels like choosing a whole life, which is why so many students stall. Most are not choosing from every subject. They are stuck between a few, each with a different pull: the one they love, the one that pays, the one they are good at.
A decision matrix works well here because the trade-offs are real and personal. Weigh what matters to you, score each major honestly, and let the totals show which one balances best.

Five factors cover most versions of this decision. Rename them, drop the ones that do not apply, and add your own. Phrase each so a higher score is always better.
- Interest
- Whether you would read about it with no exam coming.
- Career options
- How many paths the degree opens, and how easy it is to switch later.
- Aptitude
- Your grades and how hard the intro courses felt.
- Earnings
- Typical pay a few years after graduating, from your school's own data if it has it.
- Time to finish
- Credits you already have, and any extra semesters it would take.
What does it look like worked out?
Three majors: computer science, psychology and economics. Weights run 1 to 10, scores 1 to 5.
| Factor | Weight | Computer science | Psychology | Economics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Interest | 9 | 3 | 5 | 4 |
| Career options | 7 | 5 | 3 | 4 |
| Aptitude | 6 | 3 | 4 | 4 |
| Earnings | 4 | 5 | 2 | 4 |
| Time to finish | 2 | 3 | 5 | 4 |
| Total | 106 | 108 | 112 |
Each total is score times weight, added down the column.
Economics wins by 4 points. Economics wins without topping a single row. Middle options often win a matrix this way. Check that the winner is good and not merely safe: it should have no row scored 2 or lower.
Where do people go wrong?
Choosing from pay data alone. Earnings matter. Four years of a subject you dislike also shows up in your grades, and grades shape the career.
Treating the choice as final. Many students switch at least once. Give time to finish a real weight if you are already a year in.
Common questions
- What if I am interested in everything?
- Pick the three you would be most disappointed to drop. Score those. The matrix only needs a shortlist.
- Should I pick a major for money or passion?
- Give each its own row and weight. The matrix shows how much of one you are trading for the other.
